Neckar Valley

Heidelberg is a fascinating city. But sometimes it is a relief to escape the hustle and bustle. Then the romantic Neckar Valley with its numerous river bends and hidden gems is the perfect place. Nestled between the rolling hills of the Odenwald, it starts directly east of Heidelberg and offers charming villages and medieval castles. For example, the ruins of Dilsberg Fortress, located near Neckargemünd, offer panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Neckarsteinach is famously known as the “Town of Four Castles” making it a great destination for castle lovers. The four castles—Schadeck (the “Swallow’s Nest”), Vorderburg, Mittelburg, and Hinterburg—are situated on the hills overlooking the town and the Neckar River. Each castle has its own unique history and architectural style, ranging from well-preserved structures to picturesque ruins.

Hirschhorn, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Neckar Valley,” is a picturesque small town. Hirschhorn Castle is the town’s most prominent landmark, perched high above the Neckar River. Hirschhorn also features a quaint medieval Old Town district.

Not too long ago, I lived in the Neckar Valley for a number of years and know the region like the back of my hand. There are sites that can easily be visited by car. But if one loves the outdoors, there is even more to discover, such as fortress walls, hiking trails, and viewpoints. For lovers of the indoors, there are family-owned restaurants and cafes that serve delicious food.

Outstanding Personalized Tour with Manfred Pitz, “A Friend in Heidelberg”
My husband and I took my mother on a Viking Rhine River cruise to celebrate her 85th birthday in late April. We contacted Manfred and set up a day to see Heidelberg and the surrounding area. He picked us up at our ship docked in Speyer, and after a day of touring the area, he dropped us off in Rüdesheim where our ship was located later that afternoon. We left the itinerary up to him, and our day ended up just as we had hoped for! We visited the beautiful Schwetzingen Palace and Gardens and then made our way to Heidelberg castle. He drove us through the city of Heidelberg before taking us all the way to the front entrance of the castle, which greatly minimized the walking required by my elderly mother. He also assisted us by giving my mother a lovely coffee break to warm up and rest before venturing into the castle. We crossed the Neckar River on a small ferry and stopped by the Dilsberg Fortress. We then went to lunch where he joined us at a local restaurant in Hirschhorn, a small town near Heidelberg. It was perfect for a rainy day and the occasion. Manfred is a people person who anticipated our family’s needs very well. His English is excellent, and his van is perfect for touring and was meticulously maintained. We now truly have a friend in Heidelberg, and we sincerely thank him for making this day so enjoyable and unforgettable!

A friend in Heidelberg indeed!
“A friend in Heidelberg” is the perfect name for Manfred’s business. We had a group of 9 friends and family with us on a river cruise up the Rhine and we hired Manfred to tour us around Heidelberg. We had a few places we wanted to visit, which he gladly accommodated. In addition, Manfred suggested a wonderful trip to a fortress outside of town, made reservations for an authentic German lunch, and shared his beautiful city with us. He is extremely knowledgeable about the city and its history and we couldn’t have picked a better person to show us around this beautiful city.

Superb Personalized Tour
My husband and I spent a fantastic Sunday with Manfred exploring the local Heidelberg area. From the correspondence prior to arriving in Germany to every stop during our tour, Manfred continuously made us feel comfortable and well looked after. He discussed our interests with us and customized the day, which was wonderful. We especially liked seeing aspects of Heidelberg that only a local could find! We did not know much about the area, and Manfred did a great job telling us about its history and traditions. From Dilsberg Castle to the Schwetzingen Palace, we loved seeing the beauty of this region. Throughout the day, Manfred listened to our interests and continuously customized the tour to match them. I cannot recommend Manfred more highly. It was truly like spending the day with a friend!!

Highlight of Germany Trip
Don’t second-guess yourself.… reserve your time with Manfred NOW. You will thank yourself later! My husband and I arrived in Heidelberg the day prior to our time with him and had seen/done the typical tourist recommended activities. The following morning Manfred picked us up at our hotel and took us outside of Heidelberg to a little village called Dilsberg. It was a beautiful, quiet spot where we had the opportunity to walk through the castle and grounds. We then traveled to Neckarsteinach (crossing the river by way of ferry) where we sat together, had a cappuccino and chatted. As we only had a few hours to spend with Manfred, we then headed back to Heidelberg. However, that was not the end of Manfred’s graciousness. He recommended a place in his neighborhood for lunch (HUGO Wine & Dine) and later sent us (via email) details of a scenic route we could take to get to Miltenberg where our niece would be getting married a few days later. Manfred’s van is impeccably clean and comfortable. More importantly is Manfred, himself. He is a very friendly, helpful and gracious man. He is very generous with sharing his time and information. Manfred made it a top priority to get to know us and learn about our lives. The time we had with Manfred was a highlight of our time in Germany. We feel blessed to have met him and spent time with him.

We Found Our Friend in Heidelberg
From the moment you commit to this experience with Manfred you are welcomed with great information and communication. He works with you to understand and create travel together as something you want and need in this beautiful part of Germany. Our visits to the castle, palace and old town including a surprise or two making this trip worthwhile. If you like rigid plans or somewhat go with the flow this is your friend in Heidelberg without reservations. He brings personalization and customization with every kilometer, conversation and tour. We paid extra for our transportation to and from Frankfurt to Heidelberg had a special lunch with Manfred and a few other unexpected wonderful opportunities. Would use his services again as he treats it like a business and a passionate hobby. Make your appointment today!
