Black Forest

Visiting the Black Forest with its dense, dark woodlands, rolling hills, and scenic valleys is a unique experience that offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and outdoor adventure. From Heidelberg it takes us a bit more than one hour to get there.

The region is perfect for nature lovers, offering breathtaking views, tranquil lakes like Lake Mummelsee, and picturesque waterfalls such as the Geroldsau waterfall. For motorists there are scenic drives with panoramic views like the Black Forest High Road and the Badische Weinstraße (Baden Wine Route). They will take us through a beautiful scenery with countless photo opportunities.

The Black Forest is dotted with quaint villages and historic towns, each with its own unique charm. The region is famous for its traditional half-timbered houses and the iconic Black Forest cuckoo clocks. More than one of my guests purchased a handcrafted clock as a souvenir while being on tour with me. If one is interested in the day-to-day life in the old days the open-air museum “Vogtsbauernhof” is an excellent choice.

The Black Forest is also a gastronomic delight. It’s the birthplace of the famous Black Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) and is known for hearty dishes like smoked ham and sausages. One of my favorite restaurants is the Guide MICHELIN listed “Der Engel” (The Angel) in the town of Sasbachwalden. The down-to-earth, yet delicious regional cuisine benefits from the high quality of fresh produce and from an actively practiced specialty tradition. The region also produces excellent wines, particularly in the Baden wine region, where visitors can tour vineyards and sample local varieties.

We truly found a friend in Heidelberg
My son planned a trip to Germany for us and we were so lucky to find A Friend in Heidelberg, operated by Manfred Pitz. Manfred really listened and paid attention to the small details about what would make our trip enjoyable. He understood it was important that we visit Sinzheim, Ottersdorf, and the Black Forest area where we had family history. Manfred’s preparation for our tour was perfect. We were able to visit churches that had a family connection and also a museum. Manfred took us to Sinzheim, Ottersdorf, and the Black Forest. We also visited several historical sites in Strasbourg and Heidelberg. Manfred’s luxury van was spotless and a very comfortable way to travel and see the beautiful German countryside. He has a great knowledge of history, and we enjoyed learning about the German culture. We loved sharing delicious German meals at some wonderful restaurants. Manfred was a great help explaining the menu and suggesting foods we might enjoy. To sum it up, our trip was more than we ever could have hoped for and we are very grateful to our friend in Heidelberg! Manfred introduced us to the beauty of Germany and the warmth of its people. We never dreamed we would have experienced so much in two days, and we’ll always remember this meaningful trip. We highly recommend A Friend in Heidelberg!

2‑day tour with Manfred
Our family of 6 (2 teens, 2 young adults, 2 parents) had a lovely time on our 2‑day tour with Manfred. The planning phase was very easy with an initial phone call followed by numerous emails. My family was debating between 2 towns for our second day. Manfred weighed in and it was an excellent choice. The first day we explored the Black Forest area, featuring a couple of villages and an easy hike to a waterfall. In one town, my daughters had seen a cute little park on social media. It wasn’t in the town center, so Manfred worked with my daughter to find the location and made the stop on the way out of town. It was a great spot offering beautiful photo opportunities. Our 2nd day in Rothenburg was well worth the drive. Manfred suggested the night watchman’s tour (free) and timed our visit accordingly. Some reviews said it was a bit cheesy and Disney-esque. But our family found it enjoyable with interesting stories about the history of the town. On the drive to town, we were met with road closures due to an upcoming festival. Thank goodness Manfred was driving. The detours would have been frustrating for us to manage. The detour took us through picturesque countryside that we were able to enjoy without the stress of navigating. Manfred was an incredible host in Heidelberg. I would absolutely refer him to friends and book him again when in Heidelberg.

Heidelberg with a friend!
5.1 stars! Our recent two-day tour of Heidelberg, surrounds and the Black Forest was exceptional thanks to Manfred. Before we arrived in Germany from Australia, Manfred invested a significant amount of time understanding us and our plans, crafting a perfect two-day itinerary for our party of four. When we finally met Manfred in person, we already felt like old friends. His car is impeccably clean and comfortable, his approach warm and relaxed. Manfred is a great raconteur whose sense of humor made for two very fun days, together with fantastic local knowledge and insights. We were surprised and delighted by the places we visited and learned about history, people, flora and fauna and had such an incredible experience overall. We highly recommend Manfred, who will do his absolute best to ensure you take home wonderful memories like we have. ‘Lass die Schwachen hinter dir’

Our experience with Manfred!
Our experience with Manfred in Germany was absolutely amazing. He took us on a great tour where we got to see some beautiful places. To start the day he took us to this incredible restaurant. He had searched high and low for it and even called ahead to reserve a spot for us. The breakfast there was so delicious that we still talk about it months later! Our trip’s highlight was definitely Lake Mummelsee. It was our first-time experiencing snow when we saw it there, but the excitement of playing in the snow and taking in the view made it a memorable experience. I can’t even begin to express how incredible our day in Germany was with Manfred. He was so informative and knew everything about the places we visited. What really stood out was how he personalized the activities to match our interests. It made the day feel so special and unique to us! To top it all off, Manfred took us to the airport when it was time to return. Manfred went above and beyond to assist us in locating a delivery van so that we could receive our delayed package and catch our flight on time. Not only that, but he also offered to help us carry our belongings, even though it wasn’t necessary. His kindness and helpfulness were truly remarkable. I can’t recommend Manfred enough, he truly made our trip special. If you ever get the chance to visit Germany, be sure to reach out to him. You won’t be disappointed!

Wonderful Custom Daytrip
Our day with Manfred was perfect! Prior to the trip, he helped my husband and I plan an outing that included highlights of the Black Forest and the Christmas Market at Baden-Baden. Manfred even included links to videos and other info that would help us enjoy our time in Heidelberg prior to and after our time with him. When the day for our tour arrived, he picked us up in Heidelberg in his comfortable and spotless car and drove us to Lake Mummelsee. The visibility was not right for the hike we had planned, but Manfred quickly pivoted to take us on a gentle hike around Lake Mummelsee which was so picturesque with the snow & ice on the trees. We enjoyed some hot cocoa after the hike and then Manfred took us to a shop so that we could purchase a cuckoo clock at a discounted price. We had lunch at an amazing restaurant where we sampled Black Forest specialties (including black forest cake)! The Christmas Market at Baden-Baden was amazing and it was nice to be able to enjoy gluhwein knowing that Manfred would get us back safely to Heidelberg!
